Dear readers, as you are reading my posts - and other newsletters on Substack, I suppose - you probably like books too, in which case you should check out Shepherd.com, a website where authors share some of their favorite works around a topic, theme, or mood (e.g. The best books on Japan’s postwar years).

You may know that I have published two otaku guides.

Some time ago I was contacted by the good folks at Shepherds and asked to write about my five favorite books on Japan’s otaku culture. If you are curious, you can read it here.

In other news, my second book was recently translated into French, Spanish and Italian.

Okay, enough about self-promotion.

By the way, I think you know that Tokyo Calling has a separate section called Otaku Tokyo. Until now, I haven’t mailed my otaku-related posts to all my readers because I thought that most of you were not interested. However, there has been a recent increase in otaku-loving subscribers, so from now on, I’m going to mail those posts to everybody.

BUT do not despair: those posts will be clearly labelled [OTAKU], so you won’t have to open them if you are not into manga, anime, etc.
