The Japanese art of gift giving or お土産 (omiage) is a wonderful practice. Small gifts for when you visit a friend’s house, elaborate gifts for company events, or simply trinkets from a place you visited to show your co-workers you were there.

One of the things I've always appreciated about Japanese culture, and perhaps something they do better than most other countries, is their respect for noise. For instance, it's very common for people to not talk on trains, and in public, you're encourage (socially) to not be loud. America could use a good dose of that ;)

I agree. Japanese trains and public transportation in general are very quiet, I'm happy to say. On the other hand, the cities can be incredibly noisy, what with music and advertising blaring out from loudspeakers, salespersons shouting from shops to attract customers, sound trucks and cars endlessly repeating the names of politicians during the election campaigns, etc.

While I haven't been to Japan to experience that (but soon!), I imagine it's pretty similar to NYC or San Francisco, which I'm used to :)
