Far from the madding tourist crowds, the little-known city of Kōchi is the birthplace of the samurai and politician Sakamoto Ryōma and the botanist Makino Tomitarō.
Great summary of the highlights of Kochi. While I've visited in the past on business, it's on our list of places to go by car to see the sights and sample the local cuisine.
Agree. Last year, we took the ferry from Beppu to Ehime, ate a lot of mikan, and then drove down the coast to the southwestern tip of Kochi Prefecture. The water on the beaches of Kashiwajima is some of the clearest I have ever seen - on par with Okinawa. The fresh fish was also spectacular.

Thanks, Mark. Having a car is definitely a big advantage, especially if you want to explore Kochi's beautiful nature beyond the city center.

Thank you for writing this. Just what I needed for my upcoming visit to Japan.
Thanks for reading. Is it your first trip to Japan? Tokyo and Kyoto, of course, shouldn't be missed, but Kochi is a much more relaxed place.
Good review, thank you.Nice, not tourcrowded town. Hope it stays like this (:
Yeah, I hope in the future I won't be blamed for causing overtourism in Kochi...
