As always, this was fascinating. I've always found the idea of hostess clubs intriguing in a uniquely Japanese way, especially compared to what you find in the States.
Interesting and informative article. In Yokohama, I have been to a cabaret in Yokohama. I was told that such places charge the customers a certain ampount by the hour, which is inclusive of basic drinks and hostess' company, but they can also opt to order more expensive premium liquor by the bottle. Is this true?
Yes Garrett, it's basically true. I've just added a new photo which explains how a typical hostess club works. As you can see, the customer pays a basic fee which includes a number of drinks for the hostesses. There's also a 20% Service Tax. However, part of the hostesses' job is to drink as much as possible and make the customer drink as well. This can greatly inflate the final bill.
***** I have a book on the subject titled "Butterflies of the Night." It's 30 years old so many of the details (e.g. prices) have changed but there's a lot of interesting details. If at least 10 readers let me know that they want to learn more on hostess clubs, I'll make a new post with quotes from the book.
yep, that make up artist was right: western men dont need hostesses because we are not lame with the ladies. Had a few hostess and mama san girl friends. kawai sou. I always found it ironic having sex with these women, usually after their shifts. There i was getting free pleasure from these women, who were being paid very handsomely by japanese men, to engage in small talk. On quite a few occasions those japanese men indirectly paid my 100k yen/month rent. japanese men are lame, no social skills. in fact thats japanese society in general: social retards. such a pity I've retired from whoring in japan.

Mmmmm, let me try to answer that as mindfully as possible. I think your statement implies that sleeping around left and right is not wonderful. I am a hedonist, so sexual promiscuity is wonderful to me. As a hedonist, being a good, loving, caring mindful parent, by no means is as wonderful as partaking in sex on tap in Japan. The former requires diligence, responsible behaviour and above all, patience. A ton load of patience. My promiscuity was not a process, it was not a journey to "a wonderful wife and daughter." It just was, I enjoyed it. I was in the process of divorcing my wife when I knocked her up. So given my values, I had to stay to help her raise the child, which required being the best father I could be to the child. Yeh, Im still a hedonist. But I know for a fact that children need a stable, loving, non-toxic environments to flourish. I guess for many people, marriage and children are the ends after the means. But in my case, i was getting a divorce. i screwed up and impregnated her and have to now ensure the happiness, empowerment and well being of our child. It's no longer about my hedonism, but about the child's wellbeing.
That all being said, I didn't quite stop sleeping around left and right. Left maybe, but not both. I'm not going crazy juggling 17 sex partners like I wrote about. But this is japan. Its difficult not to have other sex partners. I have only two girls friends, one of whom is married and like most married Japanese women, has no communication with her husband, let alone sleep in the same room, let alone sleep in the same bed, let alone sex.
Thanks for your honesty, Stef. I could never manage a wife and two lovers, it would be too much of a headache.
***** For those who don't know Stefhen Bryan, he is the author, among other things, of "Black Passenger Yellow Cab," the picaresque tale of his sex escapades in Japan but also an interesting and thought-provoking essay on Japanese society and gender relationships.
Great insight into this world! I know people in this industry from different sides and I'm glad that you were able to not just look at it from just one angle. Like where you mention that the girls have to notice (if they want to be successful) even the slightest changes in people's moods/looks, its not just a job where girls look pretty.

If enough readers let me know that they want to learn more on the subject, I can make a new post with quotes from a very interesting book I have.

You may have quit sleeping left and right, but you have gained a wonderful wife and daughter in the process, right?

Thanks, Shawn. Yes, it looks like a high-pressure, high-stakes job. Fascinating and puzzling at the same time.
